You may have already read our article Stay attentive during the SCRUM meeting but you still have a problem during the daily stand-up meeting. But you really want (and have) to keep the SCRUM DSM effective, short !
When talking about a SCRUM team, including the 3 roles involved in the team, you know the size of the team should stay between 3 and 9 people. With an average of 6, that’s the theory ! But sometimes, a team of 9 or even 10 persons can exists. It’s not ideal, but it’s the reality of the terrain.
You can also have someone who have difficulties to stay concise and take half the time of the given time of the stand-up. And after many discussion with him / her, there is no evolution.
You can do your Scrum DSM better !
With that said, there is a last resort method, which may seem barbaric, but works pretty fine to help to keep your DSM Scrum effective. Just keep in mind it should be only for a short time as it should give result quickly. I call it the Fort Boyard challenge.
The challenge consists to have an object in your hand when talking, and keep your arm straight in front of you, parallel to the ground.
Let’s be clear, you’re not a torturer. You do not need to use a very heavy object, keep the arm straight is difficult enough. A simple object like the small balls suggested in the Stay attentive during the SCRUM meeting article is clearly a good match.
If you can’t hold your arm anymore, your speaking time is over !
You get it. Once you can’t hold it anymore, you can’t speak anymore. If you keep this rule for a long time, people may train and keep it hold a bit longer, but don’t worry ! It will not last for hours.
There are also some benefits to practicing this exercise :
- Strenghten your back
- Tone the arm
- Relive a shoulder tendinitis
You can also make the challenge funny and stopwatch to see who lasts the longest ! 😀
